When is the conversation going to switch to the rationing of care?
Everyone knows about all the costs in the system during the end stage of life. Should the government pay for this for everyone? Certainly in a free market society there will always be those that seek out the expensive and sometimes effective treatment. Is this the government’s responsibility? We make rationing decisions all the time on our children’s education at a personal level. Do we send them to public school, what is the marginally benefit if any to go to that private school?
For that matter the government rations my kids public school by cutting back on the “non” essentials. Our elected officials do this with our children’s future but not our loved ones who are elderly or those with terminal illness. The government doesn’t step in here but hopes the doctors, social workers and ultimately the patients and families do the heavy lifting to ration it.
Cleary this hasn’t worked. I would love to see this come into the national debate now before we just start spending more tax dollars to fund more healthcare.
