In this large trial of ICU patients with acute lung injury, they were randomized to trophic feeds or full feeds for 6 days. There were no differences in the groups in ventilator-free days, 60 day mortality, or infectious complications, but there were less GI complications in the trophic feeds group (e.g. less vomiting, less gastric residuals, and less constipation). Trophic feeds are preferable to full feeds for the first 6 days of acute lung injury (abstract)
