Whether performance-based payment improves patient outcomes continues to be controversial. In this large Medicare database analysis, patient outcomes were compared between hospitals participating in the Medicare pay for performance demonstration and those participating in the pay for reporting. Thirty-day mortality and decline in mortality per quarter in patients with AMI, CHF, pneumonia, or CABG were no different between the 2 hospital groups. This adds more cautionary evidence that pay for performance will not have a substantial impact on mortality rates (abstract)
