This is Daniel Brotman, Director of the Hospitalist Program at Johns Hopkins Hospital and past Annual Meeting Director for SHM. I look forward to seeing you at this year’s SHM Meeting in Washington, DC, and hope to see you at our session, The Art and Science of Clinical Reasoning!
During this session, Sanjay Saint, Chief of Medicine at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System and a Special Correspondent to the New England Journal of Medicine, will introduce the topic of clinical reasoning, reviewing the common sources of diagnostic error, and discussing ways to avoid these pitfalls. Then, I will present two cases (time permitting) to master clinician, Benjamin Mba, Associate Chair of Medicine for Faculty Development at Cook County Hospital. Case presentations will be on real patients. Dr. Mba will not know the diagnoses until the end of the presentation.

Dr. Daniel Brotman MD, FACP, SFHM is currently the Director of the Hospitalist Program at Johns Hopkins Hospital and a tenured professor at Johns Hopkins University. He hails from New England and received his undergraduate degree from Harvard in 1992 followed by his medical degree from the University of Virginia in 1997 and Internal Medicine Residency in the Osler Program at Johns Hopkins Hospital, which he completed in 2000. He spent 5 years as a Hospitalist at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, where he directed the Hospital Medicine Fellowship Program before returning to Johns Hopkins Hospital in 2005 to direct the Hospitalist Program. His roles at Hopkins are diverse and he remains active in clinical medicine and resident education, earning awards for both in the past year. Dr. Brotman’s research interests are varied and broad, with emphasis on quality improvement, thrombosis, perioperative medicine and cardiovascular disease. He has served on the SHM Research Committee, and has chaired the Education Committee and Annual Meeting Committees. He currently is a Senior Deputy Editor for the Journal of Hospital Medicine.
Sanjay Saint, MD, MPH is the Chief of Medicine at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, the George Dock Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan, and the Director of the VA/University of Michigan Patient Safety Enhancement Program. His research focuses on preventing healthcare-associated infection, implementation science, and medical decision-making. He has authored over 250 peer-reviewed papers with 80 appearing in the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Lancet or the Annals of Internal Medicine. He is an editorial board member of the Annals of Internal Medicine and numerous other journals, and an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI). He received his Medical Doctorate from UCLA, completed a medical residency and chief residency at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF), and obtained a Masters in Public Health (as a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar) from the University of Washington in Seattle. He has been a visiting professor at over 50 universities and hospitals in the United States, Europe, and Japan, and has active research studies underway with investigators in Switzerland, Italy, Japan, Australia, and Thailand.
Benjamin Mba, MBBS, MRCP (UK), FHM, FACP is the Associate Chair of Medicine for Faculty Development for Stroger Hospital of Cook County in Chicago. He is also a Firm Chief and Associate Program Director. He is Associate Professor of Medicine at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He is also one of the Associate Editors for the SGIM monthly Forum publication. Dr Mba graduated from medical school in Nigeria. He completed an internal medicine residency training program in the United Kingdom before relocating to the USA. He completed a second medicine residency program at the Cook County Hospital in Chicago where he also served as a Chief Medicine Resident. Dr. Mba has received several teaching awards from the Stroger Hospital Department of Medicine. He is a two time recipient of the Osler Award for Teaching of Internal Medicine, a four time recipient of the Division of Hospital Medicine’s Cooker Award for inpatient medicine teaching and a two time recipient of the Excellence in Medical Student Teaching Award. Dr. Mba is involved in several faculty development projects for the Stroger Hospital Department of Medicine such the Ward Attending Scholars Program (WASP) which aims to improve ward attending skills as clinician educators and team leaders and the Morning Report Moderators Program (MRMP) which aims to enhance attending skills at moderating morning reports. Dr Mba also co-created the sConnect Program which is an intranet based research mentorship program for house staff and junior faculty at the Stroger Hospital’s Department of Medicine. Dr. Mba spoke on the psychology of missed and delayed diagnosis at the Midwest Regional SHM in 2009. He was one of the presenters of a workshop on implicit bias at the SGIM National Meeting in 2013. He has presented various clinical topics at several Grand Rounds at the Stroger Hospital.
