In this large cohort of 18,695 US residents >age 6 (from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1988-94), researchers tested serum for anti-Hep E antibodies and found 21% were positive. Although the serum test is not widely available in the US, clinicians should consider testing for Hep E in patients with acute or chronic hepatitis, who are negative for A, B, and C (abstract).
