In this population based study, researchers tallied the mean annual radiation exposure of Americans from imaging procedures. They found most had low exposure (<3mSv/year), but 20% had moderate exposure (3-20mSv/year), 2% had high exposure (20-50mSv/year ), and 0.2% had very high exposure (>50mSv/year). CT and nuclear imaging accounted for 75% of the total exposure. For perspective, healthcare workers are limited to 100mSv/5 years of “safe” exposure.
