Prior SHM surveys of hospitalist compensation, productivity, and other metrics used the same survey for academic and non-academic practices, and lumped results from both into the same data set. While for most metrics separate data was provided for each practice type, there was only one survey instrument and process.
That has changed with the first survey done solely for academic practices undertaken jointly by SHM and the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA). The survey opened September 13, and closes November 5, 2010. MGMA will be publishing the compensation and production results in January; results of the full survey, including the hospital medicine supplement, will be published in the 2011 State of Hospital Medicine report next summer.
Every academic hospitalist practice should plan to submit data. The on-line survey instrument is available at http://www6.mgma.com/. There are helpful FAQs that address many issues including how to decide if your group qualifies as an academic practice for the purposes of this survey.
If you’re interested in hospitalist practice operations or are a practicing hospitalist yourself, then I hope you’re already aware of the recently published Physician Compensation and Production Survey: 2010 Report Based on 2009 Data and State of Hospital Medicine: 2010 Report Based on 2009 Data. Together these reports provide a detailed picture of many attributes of non-academic practices.
